The Halting Problem Is Decidable on a Set of Asymptotic Probability One

چکیده
The halting problem for Turing machines is decidable on a set of asymptotic probability one. The proof is sensitive to the particular computational model. The halting problem for Turing machines is perhaps the canonical undecidable set. Nevertheless, we prove that there is an algorithm deciding almost all instances of it. The halting problem is therefore among the growing collection of those exhibiting the “black hole” phenomenon of complexity theory, by which the difficulty of an unfeasible or undecidable problem is confined to a very small region, a black hole, outside of which the problem is easy. We use the most natural method for measuring the size of a set of Turing machine programs, namely, that of asymptotic density. The asymptotic density or probability of a set B of Turing machine programs is the limit of MSC: 03D10; 68Q17.

متن کاملUniversality and Almost Decidability
We present and study new definitions of universal and programmable universal unary functions and consider a new simplicity criterion: almost decidability of the halting set. A set of positive integers S is almost decidable if there exists a decidable and generic (i.e. a set of natural density one) set whose intersection with S is decidable. Every decidable set is almost decidable, but the conve...
متن کاملSome improvements in fuzzy turing machines
In this paper, we improve some previous definitions of fuzzy-type Turing machines to obtain degrees of accepting and rejecting in a computational manner. We apply a BFS-based search method and some level’s upper bounds to propose a computational process in calculating degrees of accepting and rejecting. Next, we introduce the class of Extended Fuzzy Turing Machines equipped with indeterminacy s...
متن کاملThe eccentric connectivity index of bucket recursive trees
If $G$ is a connected graph with vertex set $V$, then the eccentric connectivity index of $G$, $xi^c(G)$, is defined as $sum_{vin V(G)}deg(v)ecc(v)$ where $deg(v)$ is the degree of a vertex $v$ and $ecc(v)$ is its eccentricity. In this paper we show some convergence in probability and an asymptotic normality based on this index in random bucket recursive trees.

1. Diagonalization: The Halting problem is defined as follows: Given a TuringMachineM = 〈Q, {0, 1},Γ, δ, q0,2, F 〉 and a string w ∈ Σ∗, determine whether M halts on w. In class, we proved that the Halting problem is undecidable using two different techniques. The first technique was constructive, where we constructed a series of Turing Machines, which led to a contradiction. The second techniqu...
